RA Summer Exhibition 2022

28 Jun 2022

It almost felt normal again: Summer Exhibition on in the summer and barely a mask in sight… And yet, and yet. I don’t know why, but I didn’t love it this year.

Maybe it’s my jaded palette, but paintings with slogans don’t really do it for me anymore. Neither do angry looking polar bears. A lot of it just felt obvious. Even Grayson Perry’s (bright yellow) room couldn’t quite lift me…

Anyway, there were a few landscapes I loved, but not too much else which filled me with joy*.

*Maybe joy isn’t quite the word, but there’s been an exuberance I’ve seen more of in previous years. I was also slightly tickled by one of the Guardian comments which said something along the lines of ‘be wary of happy pictures like amateur clowns as they hide the darkest intentions’… Anyway, I do like happy pictures, and have already ‘fessed up to really liking the landscapes of Claude Lorraine! Although that possibly has more to do with with what I was craving more of growing up in 1970s Merseyside: yes, I love docks and warehouses, but I always secretly wanted more classical landscapes, too!
